 Turtles
are truly a wonder of nature, and every summer, along the shores of Mexico Maya
World, female sea turtles emerge from the surf at the dead of the night and struggle
up the beaches to lay their eggs just as they have for millions of years.
The Mayan World is one of the most important sea turtle nesting areas on the planet,
and is home to six of the seven surviving species, all of which are threatened
with extinction.
We join the worldwide conservation efforts to preserve these beautiful creatures
by selecting a sea turtle as our official mascot.
An amphibious animal which lives both in water and land, identifying with our
Multisport of triathlon, and who will welcome all the participants of the ITU
triathlon World Championships with all the joy, warmth and simpathy it represents.
The name
of YAX (pronounced yash) comes form the Mayan god YAX-AK,
which means Mr.Green Turtle.
